ATWS for XEIAD at Royal Albert Bridge

“RSSI provided an excellent solution that enabled us to carry out our works during daylight and while trains were running, guaranteeing us to work as and when we needed without the risk of line blockages being cancelled or offered for very short durations.”

Chris Miles, XEIAD

Services Delivered

XEIAD required a track warning solution for the Royal Albert Bridge examination project. Due to the nature of the bridge, examinations needed to be carried out during the hours of darkness, which would have reduced productivity, safety, and increased costs. RSSI were tasked with providing a treadle-based track warning solution that would enable XEIAD to carry out their work during daylight hours.

Key Actions

  • Installed a full ATWS, allowing examiners safe and efficient access
    during midweek dayshifts
  • TWS Planning created a unique ATWS design covering both lines on MLN2
  • TWS Planning worked with the
Plymouth signal box to create a Straight-Line Running Procedure (SLRP)
negating the need to cover wrong direction moves

Project Delivery

The project involved providing a track warning solution for the Royal Albert Bridge examination project. Due to the nature of the bridge, examinations needed to be carried out during the hours of darkness. XEIAD required a solution that would enable them to carry out their work during daylight hours and while trains were running. RSSI were tasked with providing a full ATWS, allowing examiners safe and efficient access during midweek day shifts.

TWS Planning created a unique ATWS design covering both lines on MLN2. Due to signalling in the area, trains could travel in either direction on both lines, making the ATWS more difficult to design and operate.

TWS Planning worked with the Plymouth signal box to create an SLRP, negating the need to cover wrong direction moves and simplify the running of trains on MLN2, enabling the ATWS to work efficiently.

The solution provided by RSSI allowed XEIAD to carry out their works during
daylight hours, ensuring they were able to work as and when they needed without the risk of line blockages being cancelled or offered for very short durations. The ATWS was delivered within the seven day project duration and at a value of £20,786.04.
