This honour recognises the outstanding success of the Railway Station 2030 Design Competition – a bold and inspiring initiative that engaged more than 120 students from across the West Midlands and the Black Country, encouraging them to envision the railway stations of the future.
Reimagining the Future of Rail
The Railway Station 2030 Design Competition empowered young people to think big and design without limits. Free from budget constraints, students imagined future-ready railway stations that champion innovation, accessibility, and sustainability.
But it was more than a design challenge—it was an opportunity to explore how infrastructure can shape inclusive, modern communities. Through hands-on, creative learning, students developed problem-solving skills and gained valuable insight into the role of transport in everyday life.
Inclusion at the Heart
A standout feature of the competition was its inclusive approach. Students from both mainstream and special educational needs (SEN) schools participated side by side, bringing a diverse mix of ideas, experiences, and creativity to the table.
By encouraging collaboration and inclusive thinking, the project reflected our industry’s commitment to building pathways for all, ensuring future careers in rail and infrastructure are open, accessible, and rewarding for everyone.
