“The VERSE® system is the recognised industry standard and a proven method of non-destructive SFT testing that is suitable for all rail profiles. In the past, establishing the SFT was a time-consuming, expensive and often unreliable process that involved cutting the rail.”

Karl Dean – Head of Welding

Stressing Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

Stressing is a rail engineering process that prevents heat and cold tension after installation of continuous welded rail (CWR). Environmental heat causes CWR to expand and can cause the track to buckle. Altering the rail by stretching with hydraulic tensors or heating to its Stress-Free Temperature (SFT) makes these problems less likely.

Highly Trained Stressing Officers

We are training Welding team members as Level 1-3 Stressing officers to provides individuals with the knowledge and skills to stress all types of rail. VERSE® testing is a critical component to mitigate the risks of track buckling and rail break in Continuously Welded Rail (CWR).

VERSE® Testing Methodology

VERSE® testing is a reliable method of checking the rail is at the correct stress-free temperature (SFT). It is a vital tool in rail stress management. It reduces the risk of buckling and fracturing, establishes track quality and allows planning of re-stressing programmes. One of the key advantages of the VERSE® system is that it does not require knowledge of the residual stress history of the rail. A track possession is required before taking any measurements. The VERSE® equipment consists of a portable loading frame, which is positioned over the rail. An upward vertical force is applied to the rail via the hydraulics and transducers measure the applied pressure to the vertical displacement of the rail. Measurements take between 20-30 minutes and the data collected is exportable into Excel and Access. The data is stored in a handheld computer which captures the output signals and calculates the SFT. The readings are available trackside, allowing for timely maintenance and safety decisions.

Chris Courtenay – Signalling Supervisor (Infrastructure) for Colas Rail

“Thanks to RSSI we are on top of all movements every day with nothing outstanding. ”

Ryan Steel – Field Engineer (OLE England) at Amey

“RSSI assisted in the cable running shifts, preparation work including changeovers of the 8 x track circuits and the 10c, 27c and 4 x 48c lineside cables. Their quality of work, attitude and work ethic has been absolutely spot on. ”

Dan Palmer – Installation and Construction Engineer at Carillion Signalling

“Being able to work during the day with trains still running is fantastic for team fatigue. The use of an ATWS installed for the duration makes the job even safer and removes the need for Lookouts. Thanks to the guys from RSSI for installing and managing for us.”

Robert Woods – Senior Project Manager at Amey

“The RSSI personnel who worked on the Bilston Road Track Renewal project have been exceptional and played a major part in ensuring the works were completed on time and to budget.”

Paul Brown – Project Director for Midland Metro Alliance

“The De-Veg works that the Arboriculture team undertook was to a very high standard, the site looks 100% better and everybody my end is really happy with the service you provided. ”

Jamie Gibbons – Site Manager for S&C Alliance
