Services Delivered
RSS Infrastructure (RSSI) Welding collaborated with Amey Rail Projects on a three-year contract to assist in the delivery of the L2C & K2C renewal works between Bedford, Kettering & Corby. The primary objective of the project was to complete stress testing required for the finalisation of records relating to each section and renewal activity and to ensure that the hand back package was fully compliant with Network Rail standards.
Key Actions
- RSSI and Amey Rail Projects worked together for three years on L2C & K2C renewal works
- RSSI completed stress testing and used the Verse monitoring system to measure SFT of CWR
- The team included 5 Skilled Track Operatives, 1 Controller of Site Safety & 1 Verse Engineer, with tools & equipment
- Two tests were carried out over 8 midweek night shifts under four-hour possessions
- All certification produced by Verse technology was signed off as part of the hand back package

Project Delivery
The main challenge for the project was to establish an accurate Stress-free temperature (SFT) measurement for the Continuous Welded Rails (CWR). Additionally, the project required a skilled team to carry out the tests over multiple night shifts while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
To overcome the challenges, RSSI utilised the Verse monitoring system to establish an accurate SFT measurement for the CWR. The team consisted of a 5x Skilled Track Operatives, 1x Controller of Site Safety & 1x Verse Engineer as well as tools & equipment.
The Verse technology provided a non-intrusive and reliable method of measuring the SFT of the CWR.
This allowed for accurate stress testing of the rails, ensuring that the final records and hand back package were fully compliant with Network Rail standards.
Two tests were carried out over 8x midweek night shifts under four-hour possessions. All certification produced by the VERSE technology was signed off as part of the hand back package.
The collaboration between RSSI and Amey Rail Projects was successful in delivering the L2C & K2C renewal works, meeting all safety regulations and Network Rail standards. The accurate stress testing provided by the Verse technology helped ensure the longevity of the rail infrastructure and a safe and efficient rail service for years to come.
